A normal landing pattern turned into a nightmare.
Ivan F. Ingraham describes setting up to land into the wind when the windsock shifts—just enough that he has to adjust to stay on the wind line. The jumper above him doesn’t match the turn. Seconds later, Ivan looks up and sees the shadow… then the jump boots… then those boots crash into his canopy and suspension lines.

His parachute collapses and wraps around the other jumper’s legs. At roughly 100 feet off the ground, Ivan realizes he’s relying on the other guy’s full canopy to survive—and then he starts falling fast. The tangled canopy swings loose and tries to re-inflate, but it’s too late. It whips him sideways, head down, and he hits the ground after a fall he compares to nearly off a 10-story building.

This is one of those stories that reminds you how fast “routine” becomes “life or death.”
