Dr. Thompson took a break from college and enlisted in the Army in JAN , 1967. He attended Basic training, Advanced Infantry training, OCS, airborne, Special Forces qualification, Ranger school and deployed to Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces Group in 1968 and joined MACV-SOG. He joined RT Alabama at FOB-1 as the 1-1 (assistant team leader) and began running “across the fence” (border) SOG missions. He moved to Command and Control North (CCN) in January 1969 and became the 1-0 of RT Michigan In APR he became 1-0 of RT Virginia and continued to run cross-border missions until returning to U.S. He was assigned to the U.S. Army Ranger Department as a Ranger Instructor. Then to Korea as a company commander of a provisional Ranger Company in the 2nd Infantry Division. From Korea to the XVIII Airborne Corps where he commanded a Basic Training company then to G-3 as an evaluator of Special Forces and Ranger battalion’s Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercises. From FT. Bragg he went to the University of Georgia for graduate school (MS & Ph.D.) and a follow-on ROTC assignment. This was followed by attending the Command & General Staff College and remaining there as a leadership instructor, stress on the battlefield expert and Air Land Battle 2000 project team member. His final assignment was back at the University of Georgia as the Professor of Military Science. He retired in 1988 and became full time as the CEO of High Performing Systems, Inc., an international management consulting, training and assessments company. Dr. Thompson has been heavily involved in training corporate, military, law enforcement and firefighters in leadership, decision making under high stress and suicide prevention.
